Description: The combination of eloquent, plangent solo violin and intimate, enfolding string orchestra showcase Vasks' greatest strengths as a composer. Vox amoris is an unbroken line of beautiful melody, ranging from gently nurturing to passionate, in warm, consonant tonal harmony, only fleetingly menaced by passing shadows. The concerto Distant Light covers wider emotional territory, its message of hope for the future tempered by episodes of the violent past that lead the music into dramatic outbursts of intense dissonance. Again, the solo voice of the violin floats over the proceedings in constant expressive soliloquy, highlighted in three technically challenging cadenzas. The work begins and ends in consonant serenity, disrupted by a vigorous stamping dance in the central section, which leads to the concerto's agonized climax. There is no such conflict in Lonely Angel, an expansive meditation, strongly reminiscent of the folksong and vocal traditions of Latvia, an endless line of gorgeous, glowing melody. Alina Pogostkina (violin), Sinfonietta Riga; Juha Kangas.
