Description: Hawes' requiem interpolates scenes from the Biblical story of Jesus' raising Lazarus from the dead into a setting of movements from the Requiem Mass, forming a composite work that illuminates the message of hope of resurrection of the one through the concrete example of the other. Like the Chilcott from last month, this is a requiem that follows the model of Fauré in avoiding apocalyptic imagery in favor of a message of optimism, hope and uplift. Like the Britten War Requiem, this work sets the Latin texts differently from the narrative cantata; in this case the full orchestra and choir perform the Mass in a large-scale, impressive setting, increasingly emphasizing the celebration of victory over death as the work progresses, while the more intimate story is set to smaller forces. The vocabulary throughout is tonal and very approachable, cast in terms of sumptuous, predominantly consonant harmony. A moving work which conveys its comforting and confident message with eloquence and dignity. Texts included. Thomas Walker (tenor), Elin Manahan Thomas (soprano), Rachael Lloyd (mezzo), Exeter Philharmonic & Cathedral Choirs, Royal Scottish National Orchestra; Patrick Hawes.
