Description: Shaw was an Anglican church musician who also wrote around 70 non-religious songs, many of which set texts by soldiers or others about both World Wars. A couple of pantheistic texts, a few by Shakespeare, some British folk-song settings and a variety of others are interwoven here with the former group. Shaw is direct of expression and engages immediately with his audience in short songs which almost always lack any extended piano preludes or postludes. A note: Britten though well enough of him to make him the first composer commissioned for a work at the Aldeburgh Festival (in 1948). Texts included.
