THÉODORE GOUVY (1819-1898): Oedipe à Colone.

Description: Like Iphigénie en Tauride (July 2010 - 07M006) this 1881 work is one of a remarkable series of dramatic cantatas written between 1876 and the year of Gouvy's death: ardently lyrical, holding on to the classical tradition of Mendelssohn, this 93-minute work is a fine example of the sort of musical drama which competed with opera for audience's attention during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The broken but still angry and passionate Oedipus and the radiant figure of the merciful and nourishing Antigone are Gouvy's main interest in a work which could easily be semi-staged, further blurring the line between opera and cantata like Iphigénie. 2 CDs. French-English texts. Christa Ratzenbrück (soprano), Vinzenz Haab (bass), Stephen Roberts (baritone), Joseph Cornwell (tenor), Kantorei Saarlous, La Grande Société Philharmonique; Joachim Fontaine.
