ANDRÉ JOLIVET (1905-1974): Complete Piano Works, Vol. 3 - Sonata No. 1, Piano Concerto.
Catalogue Number: 06O068
Reference: MAG 111.171
Description: The 1951 concerto is a frantic and wild work whose commission from French Radio required inspiration from French overseas dominions (and excited outbursts of anger and delight at its premiere). The three movements represent Africa, Asia and Polynesia with formidable rhythmic energy in its outer movements surrounding a lush, tropical nocturne. This has been previously only available in a live 1968 recording on the Solstice label. Like many of his piano works, the 1945 sonata has a primitive rhythmic dynamism in its outer movements which suggests ritual dances while the slow movement evokes the timeless sentience of ancient forests and holy places. Pascal Gallet (piano), Duisburg Philharmonic; Jonathan Darlington. 2007 release.
