Description: "On the Path to his Modernism" is the title of this disc which offers a possible CD premiere: the trio, which, like the sonata were planned by 1912 but not finished finally until 1920 and 1924 respectively. They are a bit of an advance on the late Romantic tone of the 1909 string quartet (already offered here last April on the horribly expensive "were're going to force you to buy a Blu-ray audio disc and pay $34 in order to get the SACD hybrid disc you can actually use" 2L label. Reger's Op. 122 violin sonata was a model for Valen as he pushes the boundaries of tonality and increases his use of dissonance in Op. 3; Op. 5 is not an advance beyond its predecessor, rather a further exploration of similar modes of compositional thought. Einar Henning Smebye (piano), Tor Johan Bøen, Per Kristian Skalstad (violin), Bénédicte Royer (viola), Johannes Martens (cello).
