JAKE HEGGIE (b.1961): Out of Darkness for Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, Baritone, Flute, Clarinet, Violin, Cello, Double Bass and Piano.
Catalogue Number: 06P091
Description: These three works are linked by a common thread: the stories of Holocaust survivors in their own words, personal recollections of individuals making comprehensible a horror otherwise too vast to understand. Another Sunrise is a monodrama telling the story of Krystyna Zywulska, who wrote poems to be sung by the prisoners in Auschwitz as small acts of resistance. Farewell, Auschwitz sets these lyrics to original music in the styles of the classical and popular tunes that the prisoners would have used. For a Look ... describes the Nazis' persecution of homosexuals through the memories of, again, an individual. This theme of haunted memory makes personal and poignant the experiences described in a way that a graphic description of the nightmare would not. Heggie's music, accordingly, is intimate in scale, thoroughly tonal, clear and comprehensible, with exquisite vocal writing; natural, storytelling music that somewhat recalls Weill and Eisler in its directness of utterance and instant accessibility. Texts included. Caitlin Lynch (soprano), Sarah Larsen (mezzo), Morgan Smith (baritone), Music of Remembrance.
