Description: Seiber's Pezzi, from 1956, is really a bona fide concerto, its three movements - Fantasia, Capriccio and Epilogue - couched in the composer's tough, tonally adventurous late style with a funereal final movement in memory of the composer's friend and fellow composer Erich Itor Kahn. In its not-too-modern but not-too-conservative style, with plenty of Hungarian flavor, Doráti's 1977 concerto is like having a late Kodály cello concerto miraculously discovered. More than a little of Bartók in it too and its continuous moving from one contrasting episode to another makes "rhapsodic" the perfect literal description. This may be its first recording since the original Starker/Louisville Orchestra one. Raphael Wallfisch (cello), BBC National Orchestra of Wales; Gábor Takács-Nagy.
