Description: One at least of these pieces should convince doubters of making works for string orchestra out of the intimate string quartet. Arnold's dates from 1975 when his life was particularly turbulent and the larger forces do justice to the juxtapositions of aggression and despair with the most beautiful lyrical melodies which characterize this work. Simpson's is the second of only two movements (1953-54) and has the relentless propulsion so often present in the fast movements of his symphonies. Orchestra of St Paul's; Ben Palmer.
