Description: Guitarist-composer Mirto's concerto is a set of four atmospheric tone-pictures in an entirely tonal neo-romantic style, based on the composer's response to the landscape and legends of Norway. The piece is very much part of the classical guitar tradition of which Rodrigo is probably the most famous exemplar, stretching back to the baroque, with something of the undemanding style of music for the screen. The guitar writing is naturally highly idiomatic and accomplished. Landscapes is a series of melodic 'scenes' over ostinato accomapniments. Krogseth is a Norwegian guitarist-composer, and his three-movement concerto, also in an exceedingly approachable classical-romantic style with popular overtones, has some distinct Norwegian flavoring, with echoes of the lighter Grieg. The work is programmatic, and rather more contrapuntally sophisticated than the Mirto. Giorgio Mirto (guitar), Florence String Ensemble; Augusto Vismara.
