HANS GÁL (1890-1987): Piano Concerto, Op. 57 (World Premiere Recording), WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART (1756-1791): Piano Concerto No. 22 in E Flat, K 482.
Catalogue Number: 06R005
Description: Gál’s 1948 concerto belongs next to a concerto by Mozart (however much it may tick you off that Avie has characteristically, again, coupled it with one). Using an orchestra of Classical dimensions, Gál produces transparent textures, everything always clear and precise, in music of a Classical sensibility. Lovely melodies and melting lyricism in the slow movement are interrupted by swells of passion that almost suggest a Rachmaninovian Romanticism (again in the slow movement). Keyboard pyrotechnics are not ignored but of a piece with Gál’s good humor and general brightness of tone. A true “feel-good” concerto (for minute counters, it’s 32:51).
