Label: Toccata Classics

Description: One of five ballets that existed before the sixth, Istar, became the first to be performed, The Shadow dates from 1916. Refused for performance at the Prague National Theatre by its intendant Otakar Ostrčil due to its length - 67 minutes of continuous dancing by its two principals was deemed physically impossible - and to its unusual (for the time) prominent use of orchestral piano, its subject is a girl who dances with her shadow in the presence of Death. Dark subject but the music is a series of buoyant and cheery dances in a neo-classical style. 13 pages of notes by the author of a new book on Martinu. Sinfonia Varsovia; Ian Hobson.
