Description: Lyrical and Romantic, Bridge’s early sonata of 1904 has already been recorded five times now since its second and final movement was completed by Paul Hindmarsh in 1996. The two rarities are Bliss’ unfinished sonata of c. 1914-16 (first recorded on EM Records five years ago) whose late Romantic atmophere is somewhat akin to early Howells, and Vaughan Williams’ Romance and Pastorale, (c.1912), which suggest themselves as antecedents to The Lark Ascending and similar pieces. W.L. Webber’s late (c.1980) three-minute Gardens is subtitled “A Late Summer Impression” and its lovely Romanticism is acknowledged by the composer’s son Julian in a brief note in which he describes his father “composing ‘out of his time’... a typically heartfelt piece with perhaps an extra nostalgic twist”. Tasmin Little (violin), Piers Lane (piano).
