KAROL RATHAUS (1895-1954): Violin Sonatas No. 1, Op. 14 and No. 2, Op. 43, Suite for Violin and Piano, Op. 27.

Description: As in his clarinet sonata of two years earlier, Rathaus experiments with non-dodecaphonic Schoenbergian atonality against a background of expressionist late Romanticism in the 1925 first sonata. The second is from 1937 and returns to a spiky Stravinskian tonality; the four short pieces that make up the 1929 suite are only slightly lighter in mood and expression than the sonatas.
