Description: The Romantic cantatas of Félicien David with their elements of melodrama and a heightened importance of instrumental passages were the main model for Moniuszko’s dramatic cantatas Polish-English texts. The subject is Part II of the dramatic poem “Forefathers’ Eve” in which peasants close themselves up in a church in order to summon ghosts who will ensure them access to heaven. The opportunities for creating orchestral atmosphere are self-evident and the ritual songs, the sorcery and the incantations have been taken faithfully, and at times literally, from folk poetry. Polish-English texts in an amazingly expensive and extravagant 190-page booklet. Aleksandra Kubas-Kruk (soprano), Jarosław Brek, Jerzy Butryn (bass-baritones), NFM Choir, Wrocław Baroque Orchestra; Andrzej Kosendiak.
