Description: Revisiting Elgar’s surviving sketches for his unfinished opera, begun in 1878 and abandoned only in 1933, Yates has made an entirely new assessment, producing a four-movement suite of selected moments including material not used in previous surveys of Elgar’s sketches, and orchestrated it in full Elgarian style. The three versions of the Civic Fanfare are of a short work used to open each Heresford Festival from 1927 to 1949. Christopher Nickol (organ), Royal Scottish National Orchestra; Martin Yates.
