Description: The "Travel Pictures" (1858) are classic Romantic examples of tone painting with such vignettes as "Hunting Scene", "In the Alps", "Storm", "Waterfall" and "Foreign Musicians" treated with colorful vividness. The First sonata (1868) is a four-movement work in purest Brahmsian style. The D major sonata (also from around 1868) has a Brahmsian first movement, a swaying Siciliano second and a finale looking back to Viennese Classicism. The G minor sonata is highly emotional and predominantly lyrical, Schumann being the comparandum here while the "Little Suite" of 1881 is a slight, four-movement work of salon character. 2 CDs. Hans Zentgraf (cello), Christoph Ullrich (piano). Original 1997 and 2003 releases.
