SZYMON LAKS (1901-1983): String Quartets No. 3 “On Polish Folk Themes”, No. 4 and No. 5 (arr. for String Orchestra).
Catalogue Number: 06W042
Description: Back in September 2017, we offered the first recording to contain all three of Laks’ surviving quartets. These string orchestra arrangements, à la Shostakovich’s quartets, may appeal to collectors. The notes credit conductor Duczmal with No. 3 but do not explicitly say that she also did the other two. Around a dozen recognizable Polish folk tunes are used in the Third of 1945 while the two others, from 1962 and 1963 return to Laks’ essential style: the bright and sometimes angular neo-classicism of the Parisian scene of the 1920s and 1930s but more chromatic and with more than a few hints of the quartets of Shostakovich. Amadeus Chamber Orchestra; Agnieszka Duczmal (No. 4), Anna Duczmal-Mróz.
