Description: The set of twelve caprices from 1875 set a Paganinian standard for players of the instrument at the time they appeared. Like studies, they deal with problems of playing the instrument while adding plenty of musical value as well. The earlier (1843) capriccio on a theme from Pacini's opera is a nine-minute operatic scene in which the virtuosic demands are extravagant. And, as a 16-minute mild shock to the system, we also have a dodecaphonic (yet always with tonal references) piece from 1945 commissioned from Dallapiccola by the great Spanish cellist Cassadò. Andrea Noferini (cello).
