Description: Cooke was Hindemith's only English student and the latter's influence is evident in the big, four-movement, 37-minute first symphony from 1947 with its polyphonic writing and sense of emotional objectivity, while certain reminiscences of Walton's big first symphony are also present in Cooke's first movement. From a year later, the string concerto is a taut, three-movement piece of 16 minutes whose Continental parallels are, rather, Bartók and Stravinsky. London Philharmonic Orchestra; Nicholas Braithwaite.
