Description: World premiere recording of the rousing choral ballad Sir Patrick Spens which Howells wrote in 1917 and whose only known performance took place in 1930. Full of fresh invention and nodding toward Stanford's The Revenge and Vaughan Williams' A Sea Symphony, its twenty minutes of colorful tone painting is the exact opposite of the deeply moving Hymnus, the composer's best-known choral work, completed in 1938 as a response to the death of his nine-year-old son from polio. Texts included. Claire Rutter (soprano), James Gilchrist (tenor), Roderick Williams (baritone), The Bach Choir, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra; David Hill.
