Description: Two of these are claimed as world premiere recordings: the second flute concerto of 1987, which has an uncommonly relaxed and pastoral first movement, a much more melancholy second and an ethnically-tinged dance-like finale (the 1961 First is almost as relaxed, upbeat and optimistic). The clarinet concerto (1970) has a spiky first movement more like some of the symphonies' fast movements, a rhapsodically lyrical slow movement and another dance-like finale. The earliest work is the 1953 cello Fantasia which, like many of Weinberg's works of the late Stalin period, adopts tones of introverted lyricism and tragic protest in a language of elusive tonality. Anders Jonhäll (flute), Urban Claesson (clarinet), Claes Gunnarsson (cello), Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra; Thord Svedlund. SACD hybrid.
