Description: Another Look at Harmony was an ongoing project of Glass' during the mid-1970s, as he started to move away from the strict overlapping patterns of single lines that characterized his early work, along with that of Terry Riley and Steve Reich, in the direction of the harmonically-based, arpeggio-driven style that became his trademark in the following decade. It' was written while Glass was also working on 'Einstein on the Beach', which it closely resembles. This Part 4 consists of chanted syllables in progressively more active tempi and denser textures, while the perpetual organ accompaniment provides the incessant pulsation familiar from Glass' best-known ensemble pieces. Increasing chromaticism and passing dissonances also became features of this developing style. Although it would have originally been performed with a smaller vocal group and an electronic organ, this 'church-style' presentation works well, adding richness and depth to the textures at the expense of the mechanistic precision of 'modern music' style of performance. Christopher Bowers-Broadbent (organ), Choir of the 21st Century; Howard Williams.
