Description: These composers share a cultural dichotomy; initially trained in China and steeped in the traditions of Chinese music, and subsequently having settled in the U.S., both are ideally placed to juxtapose elements of both cultures in fascinating and exciting ways. Some of Zhou's pieces employ actual traditional instruments, others evoke them within a tradition clearly based on Western contemporary concert music. Yi's vocabulary makes abundant use of pentatonic melody and instrumental inflections outside the traditional western scales, but makes less concession to the timbres and instrumentation of traditional Chinese music.
