Description: The clarinet and flute piece date from 1945, and like everything he wrote at this period, freshly into his life-long friendship with Shostakovich, are quite lyrical in general with a few instances of Shostakovichian march-like movements and with characteristic references to Jewish folk music. The two late works (from 1979 and 1981 respectively) are, of course, sterner stuff, the solo bassoon sonata balancing virtuosic playing techniques producing microtones and multiphonics with a grounding of tonal, attractive melodic ideas. And, as it seems, the combination of flute, viola and harp seems to produce ear-tickling sounds of delight no matter the composer and this is no exception. Wenzel Fuchs (clarinet), Henrik Wiese (flute), Mathias Baier (bassoon), Nimrod Guez (viola), Uta Jungwirth (harp), Elisaveta Blumina (piano).
