Description: Maciejewski spent almost his entire life after 1934 outside of Poland, most of it in Sweden and the U.S and his biographical details are much more interesting than average. His sonata, dating from 1938 is striking for the way in which the piano leads everything, with a 1:40 prelude, introducing each new motif and mostly being accompanied by the violin. It's a one-movement work with interesting rhythms and lyrical melodies which runs for just under 21 minutes in this performance before gently dying out. The nine-minute Notturno (1952) returns the piano to accompanist while the notes tell us nothing about why the composer chose these seven of Paganini's Caprices to arrange for violin and piano. Maciej Labecki (violin), Elzbieta Tyszecka (piano).
