Description: This Columbian composer studied in France and Italy from 1950-60 (his 1956 string quartet breathes the air of Ravel as does the 1980 suite, apparently a "trip down memory lane") before returning to teach in his home city Cali and its geographical region. The orchestral works here combine lyrical charm with vibrant South American folk influences, like the hints of Andean flute music in the Concertino of 1968 and the use of both Andean and Caribbean popular musical influences in the piano concerto of 1986. Plenty to enjoy here! Wilson Casallas (piano), Bryan Muñoz (flute), Colombia National Conservatory Symphony Orchestra; Guerassim Voronkov.
