Description: The major work here is the 26-minute Missa a cappella of 2011 which the composer built around a pre-existing Credo from 1972. In Rautavaara's late-period neo-Romantic synthesis style, it is mainly homophonic but variable in color and setting, e.g. the softly pulsating sound field with which it opens (a technique which appears not infrequently in his later works). What's amazing is how Rautavaara can construct a dodecaphonic piece like the four-minute Missa duodecanonica and have you still captivated by the romantic quality of the sound (as in, on a larger, ten-minute scale, the Rilke Elegie). Latin-English, English and German-English texts. Latvian Radio Choir; Sigards Klava.
