Description: This telling of the famous tale dates from 1791, a certain success in Revolutionary France even if Grétry did tack on an anachronistic final scene attaching 13th century Switzerland to contemporary France. The composer took a trip to Switzerland to study the music and the result is a veritable musicological slideshow of sound in Act I. Strong choral presence, a storm entr'acte and dramatic finale make it a fun way to spend 79 minutes (or less if you track through the French dialgoue). French-English libretto. Anne-Catherine Gillet (soprano), Marc Laho (tenor), Lionel Lhote (baritone), Natacha Kowalski (mezzo), Orchestra and Chorus of the Opéra royal de Wallonie; Claudio Scimone.
