Description: These song cycles from between 1902 and 1918 tapped into the late Victorian and Edwardian fascination with the danger, mystery and unrestrained sexuality associated in the western mind with "the East", meaning anywhere from Egypt to China. Slightly overheated, colored with touches of oriental exoticism, the songs meet the texts on their own ground and deliver the frisson of the unreachable secreted in faraway lands.
