Catalogue Number: 07R062
Description: These Puerto Rican cantatas date from 2005 and 2013. Estampas has an instrumental overture followed by a lullaby and three sections setting texts by 19th and 20th century Puerto Rican poets in which you’ll hear music inspired by children’s songs, modal and archaic sonorities in a text about 16th century love story between a native girl and a Spanish soldier, a patriotic piece for chorus and a finale whose syncopated rhythmic structure invites and supports a brief appearance of Spanish-language rap. “The Devil’s Sentry Box” is an adaptation of a tale from “Puerto Rican Legends and Traditions” by Cayetano Coll y Toste (1850-1930) which uses native musical styles like seis milonga, seis mapeyé and soleá rhythms alongside neo-baroque and neo-romantic flavors. All very tonal and melodic, made to appeal to the widest audience. No texts. Joel Prieto (tenor), Welmo Romero (rapper), Ricardo Lugo (bass), Orfeón San Juan Bautista, Sinfonietta Puertorriqueña; Maximiano Valdés, Guillermo Figueroa.
