Description: Harrison is an archæologist, a lover of antquities, and of art, especially the abbreviated pithy expressiveness of the miniature. This covers a lot of territory, so it is no surprise that the miniatures here encompass a broad range of styles and content. Peter Sheppard Skærved diarizes his life and travels in miniature paintings, drawings and sketches, ranging from atmospheric washes of color to detailed scenes and figures, and these are represented in the two sets of Gallery pieces. Depending on the subject matter the pieces may be abstract and atonal, or contain references to other music - Dowland, Bach, baroque or mediæval music, folk-fiddling - or consist of the pure line of melody. The suite of piano pieces - predominantly dark and enigmatic in tone - is the result of a creative collaboration with the painter Brian Graham, whose paintings evoke ancient rituals and landscape. The pieces are stark and aphoristic, etched in ancient, grey stone. The duos explore aspects of ritual from different ages and cultures, and make much play with the symbolic number 28. A wide range of technical virtuosity is required of the violinists (this is true of much of the string writing on the disc), including some vocalizing. Peter Sheppard Skærved (violin), Roderick Chadwick (piano), Diana Mathews (viola), Mihailo Trandilovski (second violin).
