Description: Everything here but the Triumphmarsch has been recorded before either on Naxos or on Chandos while cpo itself did the Third Symphony and Manfred prelude back in 2007 (05I050). But this is not only their second bite of the cherry for the symphony but also the first volume of a complete orchestral cycle. The Third dates from around 1895 and the septuagenarian composer has added Brahms to the Mendelssohnian and Schumannian influences of the 1851 First and the youthful vigor and flare of the two earlier symphonies are, for the most part, replaced with a maturity of tone which can, nevertheless, still provide a gossamer scherzo and rousing finale. Presumably celebrating the Prussian victory in the Franco-Prussian War, the 1871 march shows that he can also serve up pomp and showy brilliance in keeping with the genre and the occasion. Munich Radio Orchestra; Henry Raudales.
