Description: The first viola sonata, from 1901, helps illustrate why Juon was called “the Russian Brahms” but the second one (1924), a clarinet sonata arranged for the string instrument (again like Brahms had done) shows a much more contemporary harmonic language while the trios, again existing in varied instrumentation, are short character pieces well suited for domestic or amateur use. Basil Vendryes (viola), Igor Pikayzen (violin), William David (piano).
