Description: Koppel's rhythmically and texturally clear-cut, rather neoclassical trio, with Bartókian and folk-music inflections opens the disc. The final Prokofiev-like toccata is an especial delight. The Rasmussen is a modern recomposition of Liszt's piano work of the same title; here tolling bells and the melancholy calls of seabirds (in the strings) accompany the funeral procession, still over the same harmonic base and against the melancholy background of lapping wavelets of Liszt's work. Bentzon's piece has some neoclassical elements and a romantic warmth of harmony in a predominantly tonal language, with the composer's characteristic harmonic twists and turns. Olsen takes a turn toward a more modern vocabulary, with isolated sound events, rustling harmonics and very spare textures in the first two movements giving way to an ostinato-driven and energetic finale, with a return to the sparseness of the earlier music in the coda. Lorentzen's Contours is, as the title suggests, an exploration of instrumental sonorities and timbres, rhythmically free, suggesting the electronically mixed and processed sounds often associated with this composer. Jalina Trio.
