Description: The second Mode disc for Kavina, grand-niece of Leon Theremin, may have the obvious delights of Shore's Ed Wood music (he made a suite for this recording) and of Rózsa's famous Spellbound Concerto but almost half of this disc's 70 minutes is taken up by Neuwirth's Bählamm suite (also done by the composer expressly for this release). The complete opera appeared years ago on the Kairos label but even non-avant-garde collectors can appreciate the cold and icy and eerie textures she conjures in what, after all, was music for a tale involving "violence, sexual perversion, with wereworlves and zombies, all culminating in a ritualistic mass slaughter". Ed Wood would have enthusiastically approved. Lydia Kavina (theremin), Stephen Gosling (piano), Ensemble Sospeso; Charles Peltz.
