Description: This will go a long way toward establishing Bacewicz as rightfully belonging to the ranks of her contemporaries Lutoslawski and Panufnik (who were helped not only by being men but because they either lived a lot longer or got out of Communist Poland, or both). The first concerto (1937) is like a neo-classical divertimento, lasting a bracing and invigorating 12 minutes; No. 3 (1948) is Bacewicz' Szymanowski-esque acknowledgement of Tatra folk music and brilliant displays of delicate orchestra color. No. 7 (1965) reconciles the avant-garde of that day with her older, neo-classical style with a vivid coloristic imagination. The 1943 overture is six minutes of brilliant, nervous energy - which is to be found in all of Bacewicz' fast movements - with a brief, Nielsen-like still center. Joanna Kurkowicz (violin), Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra; Lukasz Borowicz.
