Description: Written in 2008 in memory of the Koreans who died in the Korean War, the Sinfonia da Requiem possesses a jagged intensity which is surprising coming from a young composer who has not been near a major conflict in his lifetime. But then, you find that Penderecki was one of his two major teachers and all becomes clear. This 43-minute requiem employs many traits of Penderecki's language although more connected with his later, more neo-romantic style than his earlier avant-garde one. Dissonance aplenty is employed, but no avant-garde techniques; just listening to it should leave you soaked in sweat. The 2006 concerto is much shorter, at 19 minutes, and in a single-movement and has a much more eclectic source of 20th century influences although its combination of lyricism and virtuosity make it less of an emotional wringer than the Requiem.
