Description: Taubert's first concerto (1833) was assumed by Schumann to have followed Mendelssohn's example of several notable deviations and innovations in its formal construction but the notes here leave open the question of whether these may have been independent ideas of Taubert himself. Needless to say, you will find many reminiscences of Mendelssohn in this first concerto, as you will in the Second. Coming from over 40 years later, it shows Taubert to have not been much of an innovator but he could still deliver the colorful harmonies, immediately attractive themes and masterly orchestration of the First. Rosenhain's only concerto comes from around 1842, masterfully composed, with much gorgeous music. Schumann's tepid response to it was based entirely upon its lack of innovation. We won't have that problem! Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra; Howard Shelley (piano).
