ALFREDO CASELLA (1883-1947): Symphony No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 12, A notte alta for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 30bis.
Catalogue Number: 08M004
Description: See last month (07M003) for the symphony (and we mention that this version, at 55:43, is 6:23 longer than the Chandos version). "In Deepest Night", a solo piano piece then orchestrated, dates from 1917/21. Casella called it his "only piece of program music"; it comes with his own synopsis of the ill-fated meeting on a cold, mysterious winter night, of a man and a woman, each of whom has a theme. Dark, low in volume and in an uneasy stasis at both ends, the 21-minute piece has a brief, violent climax in its middle; stylistically, it shows the traits of expressionism which Casella adopted in the teens. Sun Hee You (piano), Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma; Francesco La Vecchia.
