FRANZ SCHMIDT (1874-1939): Symphony No. 3 in A, Chaconne in D Minor.
Catalogue Number: 08M005
Description: Schmidt's Third was the Austrian section winner in the 1928 international competition to write a symphony in the vein of Schubert's Unfinished (although, at 50 minutes in length, this one is definitely finished!). It is his warmest, sunniest and most lyrical work, these qualitities often masking some rather adventurous harmonies. This is the only available recording of Schmidt's 1931 orchestration of a 1925 organ work; the Chaconne is a 27-minute monster of a work using a huge orchestra, its four sections based on the Aeoliani, Lydian, Doric and Ionian modes. Malmö Symphony Orchestra; Vassily Sinaisky.
