Description: Here's something collectors of Baltic repertoire have been waiting for: an orchestral work by a Lithuanian composer born into the earliest generation of Lithuanian composers - those whose foundation was in Romanticism, not the European avant-garde! Dating from 1948, this half-hour long, three movement concerto makes much use of a tenderly melancholy Lithuanian folk ballad in all three movements: a 15-minute first with a brashly joyous main theme and a deeply lyrical molto sostenuto second theme, an 8-minute slow movement whose inspiration, according to Dvarionas, came as "my thoughts turned to the North. I saw the northern lights, imagined a broad blue sky, and felt a deep inner rapture". A dance-like center is framed by melancholy, ballad-derived outer sections. The finale is a vigorous and constantly forward-moving rondo, again based on a variant of the ballad tune. The five-minute Pezzo elegiaco (1947) has a limpid, heart-easing tune whose beauty will capture you immediately and make you wonder why this isn't played by violinists everywhere as an encore. Vadim Gluzman (violin), Residentie Orchestra Den Haag; Neeme Järvi.
