Description: Mathias' symphony dates from 1965 and, in its incisive rhythms, lively counterpoint and bold optimism, is a perfect yang to Leighton's conflicted yin above and of almost the exact same period. Its long slow movement is a striking example of Mathias' description of one part of Celtic consciousness - darkly introspective - with the other three movements showing its dance-like and rhythmic side. Prominent piano, celesta and percussion parts add to its personal style. Oddly, Joubert's 31-minute symphony, firmly in the mainstream British 20th century tradition of Vaughan Williams, Walton, Alwyn and Arnell, was issued less than three years ago by Lyrita as a CD-single.
