Description: Many of these works have been recorded since their appearances on these Earle Brown produced LPs but Mayuzumi's Nirvana Symphony has been a bit rarer on disc (unless you live in Japan). This 33-minute work dates from 1958 and was described by the composer as having both musical/acoustical motives (tone clusters and a complex overtone structure) as well as religious ones (he said that it can be described as a Buddhist cantata). As Mark Morris puts it in an article on MusicWebInternational: "...a highly atmospheric and effective fusion of Western and Eastern ideas, with a strong impression of ritual and large aural spaces, opposing low sonorities, usually in tone-clusters, with bright high sounds. It has an undercurrent of a slow forward momentum; the sounds of bells impel the odd numbered movements, alternating and combining with chant that is elemental and, if to Western ears a little musically basic, nonetheless effective in such a combination".
