HERMAN D. KOPPEL (1908-1998): Ternio, Op. 53b, Sonata, Op. 62, Introduction, Theme with Variations and Epilogue for Solo Cello, Op. 86, BENJAMIN KOPPEL (b.1974): Professor Herman's Cellistic Imaginarium for Solo Cello.
Catalogue Number: 08N080
Description: Dating from 1951 and 1953 the energetic and quasi-Romantic Ternio (at just under 12 minutes, a sonatina) and the full-length sonata are good examples of Koppel in his mid-life period where Romanticism and neo-Classicism meet in tuneful, melodious yet strong and athletic compositions. The 1971 variations are thornier, employing a freely serial method; Koppel's grandson, a jazz/classical crossover musician was commissioned to write a work for his grandfather's centenary and produced the 13-minute Imaginarium which fuses elements of both genres in a virtuosic showpiece. Morten Zeuthen (cello), Amalie Malling (piano).
