Description: Although when seeing the name de Leeuw, you may think of atonality or serialism because of the few works that got recorded in the 60s and 70s, of the 21 piano compositions here, 17 are early works (1943-54) which have a pronounced neo-classical feel in form and structure. But de Leeuw avoided the motivic and harmonic tensions of developing motifs, tending toward Asian musical qualities in which the music continuously develops and transforms. Even the three serial works from 1955, 1964 and 1968 have the same sense of quiet flow while the latest two (1976 and 1988) come from de Leeuw's late period of what the notewriter calls "extended modality". Approachable stuff throughout and worth experimenting with for any collector interested in 20th century piano music with a slight foreign accent to the tonal idioms of that century. 2 CDs. René Eckhardt (piano).
