ANDERS KOPPEL(b.1947): Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola, Clarinet, Bassoon and Orchestra, Concerto for Flute, Harp and Orchestra, Tuba Concerto.
Catalogue Number: 08N092
Description: Fast becoming one of our favorite modern orchestral composers, Herman D. Koppel's son gives us three more utterly enjoyable compositions: the 2007 Sinfonia Concertante lives up to its title's Mozartian connotations with its elegantly convivial first movement, dreamy and bittersweet slow movement and motoric finale, while the 1998/2009 concerto for flute and harp is divided into five movements representing stages or experiences of life. High percussion and bells accentuate the pitches of the solo instruments and the music, from cradle-side to eternity, sounds like a subtle soundtrack to an impressionistic film. The tuba concerto (2003) lets its protagonist be a galumphing Straussian Don Quijote-figure whose adventures are aided, abetted and sometimes derailed by a large orchestra, with and against which the soloist needs to use every register his instrument can offer. Great fun all round! Anna Maria D. Dahl (viola), Yana Deshkova (violin), Randi Østergaard (clarinet), Sheila Popkin (bassoon), Claus Ettrup Larsen (flute), Mette Nielsen (harp), Mattias Johansson (tuba), Aalborg Symphony Orchestra; Matthias Aeschbacher.
