Description: Enthusiasts of 20th century French trumpet concertos will likely not find Planel to be an old friend, so to speak. Although he won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1933 and coposed around forty works in all genres, his main focus was as an educator and inspector of musical education for the city of Paris. This concerto, from 1966 and premiered by Maurice André, is the most conservative work here, with a 1940s American sound in the first movement and an elegant, neo-classical language elsewhere with, at times, the expected jazzy atmosphere. Desenclos will be slightly better-known and his 1953 triptych has the opulence of orchestration of Ravel married with the modal writing of Messiaen. Ole Edvard Antonsen (trumpet), São Paolo Symphony Orchestra; Lan Shui.
