Description: Skoryk's music derives from his Ukrainian heritage but is not a pale imitation in neo-Romantic style of romantic nationalism (although a couple of the really short pieces here might fit that description). His two concerti (2009 and 1983 in the order listed above) are single-movement works of 15 and 19 minutes densely packed with incident, combining bittersweet lyricism with large dynamic contrasts and the largest scale piece, the 1972 Carpathian Concerto, is a very entertaining 16 minutes which at times sounds like a combination of Enescu, Stravinsky and post-Romantic irony. Nazary Pilatyuk (violin), Valery Kazakov (cello), Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra; Hobart Earle.
