Description: Commissioned by a Bonn musical association in 1790, neither of these works were performed or published in Beethoven's lifetime but the 40-minute WoO87 was not scorned later in life by Beethoven who was usually critical of his early works and Brahms later thought that, if there had been no name on the composition, one would still know Beethoven as the composer. Worth having if you missed it the first time, especially since there is currently no other single-disc recording of the shorter Accession cantata and only one of Death that's not historical or only part of a massive box-set. German-English texts. Judith Howarth, Janice Watson (sopranos), Jean Rigby (mezzo), John Mark Ainsley (tenor), José van Dam (bass), Corydon Singers, Corydon Orchestra; Matthew Best. Original 1997 Hyperion release.
